The scarcity of the most of the conventionally used high durability timber species like teak, rosewood, deodar etc. has necessitated use of fast growing plantation timbers. However, most of the fast grown plantation timbers are susceptible to biological and physical degradation and require preservative treatment to increase their service life when used outdoors. There has been growing concern on the use of traditional metal-containing wood preservatives due to their adverse environmental and health effects.

Modification of wood is an effective method for improving dimensional stability and durability of wood. The process involves altering chemical structure of wood by physical or chemical means. It also help in climate change mitigation by enhancing carbon locking period in wood.

This webinar will focus on different types of wood modification (Chemical and thermal modification) processes and their applications in various sectors.
